For those who have trouble walking or negotiating stairs:
– The left (west) parking lot has no stairs into the main stage area, but the ground is uneven and covered with gravel inside the old mill building.
– The right (east) parking lot has no stairs into the food area, and the Cabaret Stage can be viewed from that patio also, even though it is down some stairs.
– A golf cart will be available to drive people to the seating area in front of the main stage, as well as back and forth between the lower and upper levels. Look for signs indicating where to wait for the golf cart or obtain assistance from a volunteer.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we ask that everyone abide by the following rules:

• For your own safety and that of others, all unvaccinated individuals (3 and up) MUST wear a mask covering nose and mouth unless you are at least 10 ft away from others. (Our rules may be more strict than country mandates!) Please take food and drink to an isolated location to eat. (We encourage you to  get vaccinated ASAP, unless your doctor recommends not doing so!)
• Depending on the situation at the time of the Jazz Fest, vaccinated individuals may be asked to wear masks also, due to the fact that vaccination isn’t perfect and even vaccinated people can unknowingly harbor viruses and infect others.
• Please use hand sanitizer often and stay safe!

Randy Brecker and Ada Rovatti!

Randy Brecker has had an amazingly prolific career spanning the worlds of jazz, rock, pop, and R&B. After growing up in Philadelphia, he came to Bloomington in the 1960s to study music at Indiana University, then headed to New York City to begin his career as a trumpet player.  He became a pioneer of jazz-rock fusion, starting with a stint with Blood, Sweat & Tears, then moving on to playing with many other groups; recording countless sessions with superstars like Steely Dan, James Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Frank Zappa;  forming his own band with his late brother, saxophonist Michael Brecker; and winning award after award.  More recently, he created the Brecker Brothers Reunion Band, featuring many musicians from the  original group plus his wife Ada Rovatti.

After studying at the Berklee College of Music, Italian born saxophonist, composer and arranger Ada Rovatti lived in Paris before moving to New York City. She has  performed and recorded with artists such as  James Moody, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, Joe Bonamassa,  and many more.  She has even appeared in the movie ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ featuring Julia Roberts. Soon after marrying, in 2003 Ada appeared on Randy’s Grammy-winning album 34th N Lex and Randy played on Rovatti’s second album, Under The Hat. As a band leader she has released 5 CDs.  Brecker Plays Rovatti: Sacred Bond is their most recent collaboration, featuring original compositions inspired by her (their) daughter.

Jazz music has deep roots in Black culture and has played a central role in civil rights movements that demand equality and justice, and B’Town Jazz is committed to using its resources to support the fight for racial equity and celebrate diversity through the performing arts.

As a visible sign of support, B’Town Jazz has commissioned Wayne Wallace and Greg Ward to each compose a new work for jazz ensemble that reflects on the racial crisis in our nation and underscores the significance of the Black Lives Matter movement. Their compositions will premiere at the B’Town Jazz Fest!

Wayne Wallace (left) is an award-winning performer, arranger, and composer, as well as a professor of practice in jazz studies and jazz trombone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is most well known for his creative Afro-Latin music. His impressive history can be read here.

Greg Ward (right) is a saxophonist, composer, and assistant professor of music in jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He has performed all over the world, with longer stints in Chicago and New York City. His musical tastes include Modern Jazz, Funk, and Latin, as well as Classical, Indian, Klezmer and African Music.
